Meet Rune in Oregon

"This experience has opened my eyes and shown me that life is too short to live in just one place."
Why did you choose to go abroad?
I chose to do my internship in the U.S. because I thought it was the perfect moment to step out of my comfort zone and embark on a big adventure. Plus, an internship in the U.S. always looks great on your résumé.How does U.S. culture differ from your own, and what has impressed you most so far?
In the U.S., everyone is always cheerful, or at least they present themselves that way. They're very interested in Europe, but many actually know little about it. Americans love food, but not in the greasy and unhealthy way I expected. The Americans I know pay close attention to what they eat and often eat healthier than I do. But that doesn't mean they don't indulge in sweets at work.Could you take us through a typical day? What are your routines?
My routine is waking up, having breakfast, getting ready, and then heading to work. In the meantime, I've obtained my driver's license, so I feel comfortable driving to work. My daily tasks vary greatly, but that's what I enjoy about it. Some days, I'm in the office preparing personalised tour proposals for guests, other days, I join the tours. These range from canoeing to snowshoeing to hiking. It's wonderful to show people the stunning nature of Oregon and enjoy it together. After work, I return home and start cooking dinner. This is my personal time when I make Belgian dishes that remind me of home. While cooking, I watch Belgian TV, just as if I never left. Then a dessert with a movie, and off to bed.
How has this experience abroad helped you grow personally?
This experience has opened my eyes and shown me that life is too short to live in just one place. There's so much more in the world. It has helped me grow in independence; I had to figure things out on my own when something didn't work, but I always managed. Professionally, I've made significant strides, and this has certainly prepared me for a professional life.
Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
It might cost some money, but that shouldn't be a reason to miss out on this opportunity. Everyone should take this chance. It completely changes you as a person, and you feel like the world is at your feet. In the end, you'll gain a second home from it.
If you could express your experience in three words, what would they be?
Self-reliant, adventurous, mind-opening.
